July book: The Nowhere Child by Christian White

The Nowhere Child

by Christian White

(discussion led by KE)

Some background links to get you started:

What we discussed about the book:
  • The 'prescription' for a mystery/thriller - how closely did this book follow that plan?
  • Who picked 'whodunnit' and at what point in the novel? What were the clues?
  • The concept of the Evangelic snake-handling - we discussed some of the background to this practice
  • The idea that a photo shows a moment not a story
  • The process of tracking Sammy down...how credible was that? (similar, but different to the real-life Lion process...so do-able)
  • What was the role of sibling guilt?

And then we were distracted onto:
  • the decay theory of psychology - is it better to put things behind you, move on and forget about past trauma
  • how well this book would adapt to a screenplay
  • Is there really a town of Manson?
  • Stephen King's 'On Writing' - how did that influence the structure or execution of the novel?

In other news:
  • One of our original No.1 Ladies (M) graced us with her presence all the way from Perth and discovered she and our newgirl have matching dogs (Nova Scotian Ducktoller).
  • Game of Thrones - yay or nay? Yay-sayers tell the others to stick with it past the first few episodes
  • We discussed aged care facilities
  • Recommendation of the movie - Head Full of Honey
